I call myself
The Occasional Audiophile because I
occasionally perfectly triangulate
myself sitting in front of my speakers and listen to the music critically to
make sure everything is working as it should, but I mostly
listen to my music in the background while I am doing other things (a small house
full of wonderful music)... I
listen to CDs played on a 1999 Technics
SL-PD8
5 disc rotary changer that
is connected to a
Schiit
MODI+
DAC via toslink optical cable.
I upgraded my system (12/8/2025)
when I traded away my set of ADS L780/2 speakers for a 1978
harman/kardon 730 twin powered receiver.
The 730 is currently being restored by a local
retired electrical egineer hobbyist that specializes in vintage
Hi-Fi restorations.

This h/k unit is better suited to driving my large bookshelf ADS
speakers and it has
officially replaced my trusty Marantz 2238B.
The
sweet sounding ADS bookshelf speakers are model L980/2, these
large and heavy loudspeakers were made in 1983,
more on them in a minute. I have also added
Grado RS2e
headphones that were made in 2014.
H/K 730 twin powered restoration details:
• All electrolytic caps, premium Nichicon / Wima • Power-supply filter caps,
modern OnSemi output transistors, diodes, transistors, and relays replaced. •
Every pot & switch cleaned/lubricated (the right way) – zero scratchiness • Bias
& DC offset set to spec • Full load & power testing • 72-hr burn-in • Tuner
realigned • Faceplate hand-polished, all glass front lapped to remove scratches
• New LED lights • Modern speaker terminals
This receiver bench tested at 54 watts per channel
after the restoration was completed.
The next upgrade I have planned for my system is an
exterior FM radio antenna.
.
Gear I no longer need or have space for.
Technics SA-460 silver face receiver, vintage floor model.
Technics SA-A X810 surround sound receiver,
lightly used in the box.
